Instructions
Create a running log with columns for Date, Category, Description, and Amount. Add at least 15 rows of sample expenses across 3–4 categories.
In a separate summary area, list each unique category and use SUMIF to total spending per category:
=SUMIF(B2:B16,"Groceries",D2:D16)
This adds up the Amount column, but only for rows where the Category matches "Groceries".
Sample Data
| Date | Category | Description | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-01-03 | Groceries | Weekly shop | 62.40 |
| 2026-01-05 | Transport | Gas | 45.00 |
| 2026-01-07 | Groceries | Weekly shop | 58.15 |
Challenge
Add a COUNTIF next to each category total showing how many transactions fall into it, not just the dollar total.
Expected Result
A log-style expense tracker with an automatic category summary that updates as you add new rows.
